Pio Cesare

Region: Piemonte, Italy

Benchmark Barolo

This historic family-owned estate is named after its founder Cesare Pio, who established the business in 1881. It is based in Alba in the heart of the Piemonte region, nestled between the Alps and the Mediterranean Sea. The surrounding hills provide a handful of ideal exposures for grape growing with unique micro-climates. The confluence of cold Alpine air with warm maritime moisture regularly creates a low mist, or ‘nebbia’, over these foothills, hence Nebbiolo, the great red variety of the region.

In the 1950s, Pio Cesare was one of the first producers to export quality Barolo to the UK market and thus develop the wine’s reputation. Today, the founder’s great grandson Pio Boffa continues the family tradition producing Piemonte wines in a style that manages to balance the best of the old with the best of the new.

It is an undeniable fact that great wine producers are those with great vineyards. Pio Cesare own 52 hectares amongst the hills of Barolo and Barbaresco. The various vineyards produce grapes of differing character with which the tradition of a blended Barolo creates a harmonious wine. Individual sites include 16 hectares of the noted ‘Ornato’ vineyard in Barolo and 18 hectares of ‘Il Bricco’ in Barbaresco. Additional grapes are purchased from a selection of reputable Piemonte growers with whom Pio has maintained established contracts for over four generations.

In the winery, ‘minimal intervention’ is the approach. Pio Boffa has been responsible for evolving the family style, carefully modernising the wines without losing the classic family traits or the Piemonte character. Shorter maceration, separate lot fermentation, judicious selection from barrel and large cask ageing all respect the individuality of the region’s wines. These are wines that are determined by the vineyard rather than fashion.

There are a total of 11 wines within the portfolio which includes seven ‘classic’ wines representing the significant and diverse terroirs of Piemonte (Barolo, Barbaresco, Nebbiolo d’Alba, Barbera d’Alba, Dolcetto d’Alba, l’Altro Chardonnay and Gavi). Pio Cesare has established itself as a benchmark producer of the classic wines of the region, particularly Barolo.

Recently, Pio Boffa has added a limited range of ‘Single Vineyard’ Barolo, Barbaresco, Barbera and Chardonnay wines. These are only produced in the very best vintages, offering a more modern interpretation of some of the great individual sites in Piemonte. Aged in new oak barrels, Barolo ‘Ornato’ and Barbaresco ‘Il Bricco’ are renowned wines. Notable also is the Barolo vineyard of ‘Colombaro’ in which Pio Boffa has, unusually, planted Barbera instead of Nebbiolo. The wine is called Barbera d’Alba ‘Fides’ and it is a truly unique, worldclass wine.

Together with the classic range, these are ranked amongst the world’s best wines. From top-class Barolo and Barbaresco to crisp Gavi and Chardonnay, the wines of Pio Cesare offer exceptional choice, quality and value. Visit the web site for Pio Cesare
